Post No. PE028 - Senior Scientific Officer
We are looking for a committed and self-motivated individual to act as the lead officer for implementing the Council's Air Quality and Contaminated Land duties. You'll hold a relevant degree or diploma and have previous experience in a similar role. You may be a specialist in air quality, contaminated land or a related field, or an Environmental Health Officer looking for a new challenge.
The post requires you to demonstrate effective communication skills and be able to quickly establish influential working relationships with a range of partners both within the Council and from external organisations. You'll also have an ability to organise and prioritise work to meet deadlines and be confident when dealing with work of a technical nature
This opportunity has become available at a crucial and exciting point in relation to Local Air Quality Management in Newport: we have recently developed a Sustainable Travel Strategy for the authority and work is now progressing to develop localised plans (Air Quality Action Plans) under that strategy to improve air quality in our declared Air Quality Management Areas. This is in the context of the significant decision by the Welsh Government not to progress with the M4 relief road and the growth of the city's population over recent years.
Newport, in common with many urban areas, has an interesting industrial heritage and many of these brownfield sites are now being redeveloped as the regeneration of the city continues. Working alongside Planning department colleagues and developers, this post is key to ensuring that contamination issues are addressed. It will also build on the progress already made implementing our Contaminated Land Inspection Strategy.
Newport City Council's success can be attributed to our forward thinking, positive approach. It's what enables us to deliver high-quality services that are continuously improving. It is clear that we can offer a wide range of experience and challenges to the successful applicant.
For an informal chat about this opportunity, please contact Kelly Lee, Principal Environmental Health Officer on 01633 851719.
