Post No. NCC7355 - Senior Technical Officer - Health and Safety, Port Health and Infectious Disease Control Team
We are pleased to offer an opportunity for an experienced individual to join our team covering Health & Safety, Port Health and Infectious Disease Control. This post offers an excellent opportunity to enjoy the challenges of delivering a key front-line service across a diverse range of workplaces and establishments in a city local authority.
You will hold a relevant NVQ or Level 4 qualification in Health and Safety or the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. You will be able to demonstrate use of the broad range of skills needed to meet the requirements of an officer authorised under the Health and Safety at Work Act. You will be comfortable undertaking accident investigations and routine programmed Health and Safety inspections, and ideally have experience of investigating infectious and communicable diseases or be willing to develop such skills.
The post requires you to hold effective written and verbal communication skills and be able to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with people. The ability to build effective relationships with internal and external partners, including businesses who need to be inspected, visited or investigated, is essential.
The successful candidate will be confident in the relevant areas of regulatory enforcement. You will be comfortable operating in challenging circumstances such as accident investigations, outbreak investigations or workplace complaints. You will be capable of organising and prioritising your own work to meet challenging deadlines and you will be content to operate in both a self-sufficient manner and as part of a high performing team.
Experience of dealing with Tattooists, Skin-piercing establishments and other cosmetic practices is desirable as Wales prepares for the Special Procedures legislation in the coming years.
The Health and Safety team sits within Law & Regulation and works closely with other sections of the service including Food Safety, Housing, Environmental Protection, Licensing and Trading Standards colleagues. There will be opportunities to get involved in department-wide projects when service needs dictate; this includes supporting the Council’s Covid-19 response where needed.
Newport City Council operates a flexi-time system, with Council employee benefits including car lease and cycle to work schemes. An agile manner of working allows a split between office, site and home working as the service needs dictate.
