Role Title:
Lay Members – Governance and Audit Committee
(Chairperson plus 2 additional lay members)
If you have an interest or experience in governance, audit, performance or risk management and want to help Newport City Council ensure that it is governed effectively,
this could be for you!
A detailed knowledge of local government is not necessary although it would be expected that potential candidates would be interested in matters relating to public life and services. From May 2022 Governance and Audit Committees will be chaired by a Lay Person, so a willingness and ability to fulfil this role is desirable.

This statutory committee is a key component of Newport’s governance framework and improvement programme. The purpose of the Governance and Audit Committee is to provide independent assurance on the adequacy and effectiveness of the risk management framework, internal control environment, performance assessment, complaints handling and integrity of the financial reporting and governance processes. By overseeing both internal and external audit it makes an important contribution to ensuring that effective assurance arrangements are in place.
A lay person:
Is not a member or an officer of any local authority,
Has not been at any time in the period of twelve months ending with the date of appointment been a member or an officer of any local authority, and
Is not the spouse or civil partner of a member or an officer of any local authority.
LOCATION:
Civic Centre, Newport / Remote / Hybrid Meetings
CURRENT ALLOWANCE:
£105 for Half day (£138 for the Chair)
Remuneration is paid in accordance with the rates determined by the Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales
WG42164 Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales Annual Report (gov.wales)
COMITTMENT:
7 to 10 meetings per annum
TERM OF APPOINTMENT:
For a period of 5 years, but could be re-appointed for a further term
DBS CHECK:
Not Required (Disclosure & Barring Service Check)
CLOSING DATE:
